Pipe eating
A modification of unmanned pipe jacking is the traversing of existing lines, known as "pipe eating".
The damaged sewer is drilled out, destroyed, and removed. At the same time, the new line is created in the existing route, with the same or greater nominal size. The prerequisite is intact pipe bedding.
In this procedure, it is important that the connecting sewers to be kept on the line side are disconnected and sealed before traversing. These requirements must be met, as otherwise soil/water mixtures from the pipe-jacking machine impact area will get into the sewage system and interrupt the water flushing system. Before drilling out, the old pipe has to be filled in.
